Service has
also been improved for cars. Drivers can now obtain tickets onboard
the gondola, thanks to the newly installed mobile automatic sellers.
Due to growing
numbers of visitors and tourists, the Biscay Transporter BridgeSociety

Throughout
a lifespan of over a hundred years, the Bridge has had to modify
the services offered to meet the challenge of modern times.
Horse-drawn
carriages gave way to motor vehicles and cattle, once a recurrent
sight on the bridge, became a rare one as the surrounding area took
a more residential outlook. We will now take a look at the different
regulations and fares that have taken effect through the years.
Tickets
from the Sixties
Original
Regulations
Highlights from
the first-ever set of fares and regulations:
Maximum number of passengers: 100. Maximum load: 10,000 kilos. Passengers
travelling on the central part of the gondola and coachmen paid
second class fares"In the event of overbooking "1st class
passengers had preference over them. Two different
timetables were operational; evening fares were double the price
of daylight ones. Service
could not be demanded unless the sum of the fares paid for that
crossing added up to at least 50 cents.
Original
Regulations Fares

2nd class: 5 cents. Piece

10 cents, 2nd class: 5 cents. Trailer

After
the Reconstruction
Although
some minor changes had taken place throughout the years, it was
in 1941 after the reconstruction of the Bridge that regulations
and fares underwent substantial alterations. The main points were
the following:
The maximum number of passengers went up to 150, but the maximum
load was still 10,000 kilos. Tickets
were no longer sold on a 1st and 2nd class basis, but by order of
arrival. Night service
was suspended, from 10 p.m. in the winter and from 11 p.m. in the
summer. The local authorities, on certain festivities or for special
events could modify this. Installation
of vehicle scales, for improved accuracy when calculating load weight.
After
the reconstruction fares

of luggage or package up to 30 kilos: 20 cents. Horse,
mule, ox, donkey or cow, with or without harness: 1 peseta
and 50 cents. Coach
or bus, excluding driver: 7 pesetas and 65 cents. Funerals:
up to 50 people plus coffin and hearse: 33.90 pesetas.

Eighties
We
take a look now at prices in 1987.
